Kindling - Midnight and Sweetheart - May 4, 2008

We have two separate litters today. One I've been waiting and waiting it seems forever for, and one that came earlier than anticipated.

Sweetheart had six-eight fat babies. This is one of my home-bred girls . She did everything perfectly. All babies look good. The nest has been made well.

Midnight had seven to nice solid black, possibly dark grey babies. Not sure if there is white on any of them. Did not expect these to be born until Thursday this week. She was bred to a lion-head buck so we'll have to see what the littles are like as they grow. I'm thinking that her cage-mate Snowflake missed on her breeding to a dutch buck as she shows no signs of having littles or being at all interested in them. One Chinchilla, one black with white spots, two solid blacks, one brown (chestnut agouti maybe?) and the rest varying shades of brown/black/ Interesting litter. None from Snowflake.

Did an Exchange of Rabbits - April 15, 2008

Brown lop doe for a white female supposed to be lop, but ears don't stay down, but I know it has lop in it so should be okay for breeding lop eared bunnies. Supposed to be 2-3 months old.

Two young lop males for about 4 month old lop bi-colour male and cute brownish lop female (about two months).

Had Skittles bred by a Rex rabbit.

Had my lop-lop breed a doe.

Traded my brown dutchie buck for a black dutchie buck.

Learned a bit more about what I don't like in rabbit keeping. Keeping rabbits in small cages. Yes, helps to minimize space commitments, but doesn't let rabbits be rabbits. Hopping, boinking, chewing, digging, being curious about life and stuff, that's what I like to see rabbits doing.

Be one thing if I was a meat rabbit producer, but for mostly pet rabbits I say...give them some room to stretch their legs out a bit!

Dutch bunnies

So Blaze's babies are growing well. Born April 6, these are good little bunnies. She has four black and white and one chocolate and white. None have great markings, but they look like dutchies.

One of them growls when I pick it up unless I cuddle it to me and cover it's head. It's actually quite funny in some ways. This wee one is just two weeks, just a wee bundle of bunny and it growls the entire time you are holding it. The others are just fine when I pick them up, just this one that growls. Doesn't bode well for having a good temperament.

I have a young lady who is quite interested in the chocolate baby already. She'll probably take that one home in three weeks with her. She's going to build it a nice cage first. :)

Mayin Kindled - April 12, 2008

Mayin has kindled, early this morning.

She has three kits.

She has gotten aggressive with Miffy. Need to find a place for her to go. BUT AH!!!!! where do I put her????? Rather disappointed in that, as these two were so friendly and nice with each other. Ah well.....

Blaze - Dutch Doe Kindled - April 6, 2008

So my dutch doe (decided just now I can call her Blaze) had some babies born yesterday.
She kindled in the afternoon while Justin and I were playing in the backyard. You can see her picture here.

When I first checked up on her I thought she might have 8 babies, but turns out that she didn't. I think she has 5 babies there. Which is okay for an unexpected litter and for a first time mom. We'll see how she does.

This litter is the result of me unexpectedly discovering that her sister was actually a brother. He was immediately removed from their cage and given his own housing. Silly bunnies!

Ah well, so I have a litter of dutch bunnies now. Blaze is being a little aggressive. We'll have to see how she goes.

Lop Hop

Lop Hop.
He's my first buck. He's part of my real foray into the world a pet rabbit breeding. Sept. 2007.

I got him from a fellow who wanted some californian rabbits from a friend of mine. he had no use for Lop Hop and his sister Brown Doe (I know, real original name I gave her eh?). So he gave them to me as long as I gave them a decent home.

Lop Hop is in a temporary cage which needed to be buttressed a little. HE ESCAPES! Give this bunny a chance and he's off out. Outside he's fairly easy to catch, in a garage...COMPLETELY different ball game! :)
He's VERY people friendly. Gets along with anything and everything. Easy to pick up, pet, handle, move around from place to place. All around a good rabbit.
Breeds good bunnies that sell well.
I am very pleased with him as a rabbit.

Rascal - Lionhead Buck!

Another purchase from the London Market that no one else wanted. I took him (apparently, learned this today, she is a him!) home for $1.00. I've named him Rascal because it just seems to suit him. :) Double-checked because I noted my calm quiet buck that I had added to the cage with these young does was not being particularly friendly with this youngster and was actively chasing him away from the young does. And yes, the other two ARE young does. :) I had wondered what was up with that and now I know. ARGH....mental note...Do not trust other folks. Check them out yourself just to be sure.

Solid grey, with a mane. Have NO clue how old he is. He is tiny. Based on how he acts I'm guessing that he's around four months old. Late developer for sure. Everything is very small on this young buck, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that he was thought to be a she!

VERY skittish. Hoping in time he'll settle down. He's obviously never been handled.

Has a nice mane.

Today was the first time in two weeks that he's poked his head up to see what's going on in the big world around him. AND he's getting closer when I water him in the mornings. :) So perhaps he'll soon realize that I'll not hurt him and that life is pretty good around here.
