Biscuit - March 7, 2012

thirteen kits born to Biscuit and Kayvin.

Kayvin was a flemish giant buck I had here for about a week.  he was a rescue awaiting a his own home.   Found him one but bred him to Biscuit before he left.

One kit fostered to Dusty

Three Temporary Residents

Peter: a mixed breed meat mutt.   My guess is New Zealand crossed with something as that's a fairly common mix.  he's a big enough boy.. 8 lbs.

Marco - booted Chocolate Mini rex Buck.  Awaiting a pedigree on this lad.

Kayvin - Flemish Giant buck.   This lad is apparently about 8 months old and is proven.   I'm hopefully going to use him with Biscuit.      I don't have a picture of him yet.

All will be for sale.   I have a minimum price in mind, so if you are interested contact me for details.

Shine

This girlie was due September 8 to Simon.

She laboured overnight, ended up with one large dead kit late september 9.

She still didn't look right and had Major mega attitude, so September 10 kicked her out on grass in a double ex-pen for lots of exercise. In the early evening she delivered another very large kit and one normal sized kit, both DOA. Once delivered her mega attitude disappeared. Hopefully to resume being a normal attitudinal doe.

had three more DOA kits overnight of September 10.

This would have been a good sized litter for this young doe. We'll give her another shot with a smaller breed buck and see how that works for her.

Temperance - September 3

Ten popples born.

Popples is a term of endearment for kits used by various rabbit breeders. it's a term started by folks at homesteadingtoday.com.

Look to be all black, may contain surprises.

at five days post birth looks like some chinchilla or chestnuts may be showing up in the litter!

New New Easter - January 10, 2009

A first litter for New New Easter.
This red new zealand is my son's bunny.
She's a good rabbit.

Had five babies (I think).
Dad is Red, my previous harlequin buck.

She built a good nest.
She's a bit of a nervous momma but thus far is doing a good job raising them.

I may or may not keep a doe from this litter. :)

looks like three magpies and two japanese babies. I'll need to take pics but one of them I'm quite intrigued by. :) that's the fun with harle's....you never know quite what you'll get in the nest box. :)

Carmen's own

Five chestnut, three large, two small

Two Chinchilla, one large, one small

one good size black

two large white, one small

Midnight - November 27, 2008

Midnight has kindled. Red is the dad. This will be her last litter.

This doe has been making and destroying nests for the past two weeks. Silly rabbit.

She usually comes in early, but this time she went a day longer. I was really starting to wonder what was up with her. She's had difficulty with this litter. One DOA, one on the wire, and six shivering in a pile. Normally she kindles eight nice sized babies with all babies nice and warm in a nest.

After warming the one on the wire in my arm pit, I stuck them all in with Carmen's litter to warm up. Carmen has 11 babies and that nest is VERY warm. 1/2 an hour later I had squeaking babies so I put them in the nest Midnight has built but hadn't actually used.

Will be keeping a close eye on her as there was more blood than normal in the nesting area.

Three black and four harlequin coloured.

In the middle of the afternoon we have seven warm babies with full tummies so, at the time of this writing, so far so good. :) Lost one at weaning.

Rescued rabbits

So...rescued a whack of rabbits over the past couple of weeks.

26 the first visit. Meat rabbits, dutchie cross, dwarf (ND/polish cross), holland lops.
11 this visit. Meat rabbits, dutchie baby, black ???, and rex.

5 worth keeping out of the first batch. Had to take one back as I'd been given the wrong one. Figures it had to be the one that my buggy really, really liked.
2 perhaps in this batch.

Bugs me when folks can't take care of their critters well.
If you can't house them properly... don't have them! Just makes me angry it does!

Carmen (formerly brown meat girl)- November 14, 2008

Brown Meat Girl kindled last night.

She has 11 or 12 babies. At least three white, the rest look dark. Hoping to have at least one chin in the mix. Yes...for some reason i like that colour. :)

She built a good nest.

I'm happy enough. :)

What's left from New Girls' Litter

Mopsy (M)

Sheila(M)

Squeakers(F)

Little Bit(M)

Friday, October 24, 2008

I like it when.....

Mom's come by with little boys to show off bunnies and look for a particular bunny.... and little boy spots a different one and immediately falls in love with it.

A lady came up yesterday from Waterloo with her little boy. Was going to look at my hand-raised bunnies. Looked them over, looked over my lops, looked over my other meat bunnies and then little boy (doing what little boys do...wandered around the yard a bit while mom looked a bit more). He saw this little white boy that I had gotten at the market last Saturday... and little boy just fell for that bunny. Wouldn't let it go. Carried it well and everything. Mom spotted my white meat boys and fell for one of them. They came for one tiny meat rabbit and left with one big meat rabbit and one i'm not sure what it is white rabbit. Both happy.

Mom's been a rabbit person before so she knows what she is getting into so all is good.

New Girl's Littles

So New Girl had died when her babies were just 13 days old.

That meant I had to bottle raise 11 babies. From what I read I would be fortunate to save half of them so my goal became to save 5. I managed to save 4. I had thought for a good while that I would save 5 but one mysteriously died on me. I say mysteriously because it was sucking away on a bottle then jerked off the bottle and died. Nothing unusual in what it had been doing. It had been eager to drink and had been quite busy and happy during the day, so it was rather odd and disturbing.

Who we have left are Sheila, Little Bit, Mopsy and Squeakers. I'm hoping to take pics of them later today or this weekend.

I am grateful to a church family who gave us oodles of goat milk for these babies. :)

New Girl - late September 13

Middle of a downpour, rain coming in on her, not a good scene.

I think she has 11 babies. Four dark, seven broken.

I freaked momma out when I put additional rain cover over her, so hopefully all will be well this morning.

Bred to Red, these will be meat type bunnies.

New Girl is a bit under the weather so I'm helping her feed her babies with goat milk from a local farmer in our congregation.
