Getting Sad

So my old girl Slip is starting to miss (not catch) when put with a buck. Slippers is my favourite girlie. I'm having to start facing the thought that she's nearing the end of her productive life and I don't want to see that happen. It's like...can I devote another cage to a pet rabbit?

For Slippers I will, even if all I ever get is one litter a year, or don't even get a litter. (See...I have this mental rule of not keeping unproductive animals - learned that from my dad as a youngster). But then I'm going to start praying (well..okay hoping since praying somehow in THIS particular connection seems WRONG) that Old Jack will die soon. For those who don't know...Old Jack is my OTHER retired rabbit who is 8 (almost 9) years old who is an absolute sweetheart. In the spring he looked so awful you'd think he'd be dead in three weeks...here he is...7 months later and he looks better than ever). Anyways, then Slippers can go into his cage and just be a retired bunny, raise up my young girls for me, and just be a nice bunny having a relaxing retirement.

Still doesn't mean that I like it. Cause I don't. If I could get one more nice doeling from her... One like Miss Ora... I would be a happy camper. I've heard people say that 90% of your herd eventually comes from about 10% of your stock...and Slips genetics... I want to keep them. She is a healthy rabbit who breeds healthy kits. Just a very solid, calm quiet doe. She's exactly the kind of rabbit that I want to raise around here. One that is calm, curious, and very healthy.

April - December 18, kindles

One kit, DOA. Had three more kits during the night. All DOA.

Would have been a small broken black.

Donatello the dad.

Very disappointed by this.

had another two days later.

So all in all, five kits. Would have been a decent sized litter for this doe.

Bunny Sales

So... Sold two of Dolly's kits today. They were supposed to go to two different people, but the one didn't answer her phone. So.. took them both up to see the second person whose whole family fell in love with them. They simply couldn't make up their minds as to which to keep and which not to. So I made them a deal. Buy both, I'll knock $2 off the one. DONE!

Two nice bunnies. One happy family. Just lovely. :)

Then home tonight, it's 1120, a guy emails and asks to have the last one of the litter. Can he come out now to get it? Said..no.. I'm going to bed! :) you can have her if you come out tomorrow a.m. and get her. He said sure...not a problem.

So tomorrow I will have sold the entire litter from Dolly. No need to pet store the last kit.

Sold one for $45 (sold it twice, first sale fell through), three for $25 and two for $20 and one for $18. That works for me, helps pay feed bills for sure. :)

Aggie kindles - December 6, 2010

This doe has been niggling at me all day, thinking she was going to kindle, thinking she was going to have some trouble. Kept a check on her.

She finally had two kits at 9 p.m. One was long and stretched out, the other normal sized. Both were dead. Both were broken black.

It's a disappointment.

Damian the dad.

Make that three kits. Last one born much later, probably could have saved it had I known, ah well.

Silver Kindles - December 6, 2010

Six kits, variety of colours, self and broken.

Mr. Wiggins is dad. Five regular, one small.

Made a decent nest.

Lucy - Kindles December 6, 2010

Four kits born.

One DOA

Laddie is dad.

Found them slightly chilled this morning, remade nest, added some fur and Chelesea's baby to the mix and two hours later all snuggly warm. Luce pulled more fur as well. Hopefully this litter will do well.

Chelsea - November 28, 2010

This is a return to me, returned pregnant. Was supposed to be due in a couple of weeks, and well....She gave me one way earlier than I expected!

One very furred blue kit.

It was fostered to Bea as one kit alone doesn't keep warm very well.

Will be rebreeding Chelsea to see how she does her. She was supposed to have a temperament issue, but I have yet to see any temper on her. Time will tell as she's still REALLY new here (came last Thursday).

I am hoping it will be a buck.

Nicky - kindles, November 27, 2010

Nicky kindled mid-morning.
One kit, DOA.

Built an okay nest, nothing really good though.
I find it fascinating that the polish build tunnel nests.

Laddie was dad.

Bea - Kindles - November 27, 2010 early a.m.

Bea five kits.
Ben is dad.

Two broken, three self. Suspect all black, though not sure on the one as it has a spot on forehead so it might be a castor.

Didn't pull enough fur so I added some.

I got it cleaned!!!

So it took two days but I got the rabbitry all nice and cleaned...

Cages power-washed and bleached and power-washed again.
Plastic sheeting replaced.
Cobwebs and spiderwebs destroyed.
Floor raked, a new catch pan installed.

It smells better and looks better.

I plan to once a month scrub the waste troughs down. And in the winter to use the melt water to wash down the plastic sheeting.

Rabbits have been somewhat reorganized, not a whole lot, just a bit. My momma bunnies were left where they were but most everyone except for the bucks were shifted around abit.

Dorchester Rabbit Show

So it was THOROUGHLY impressed upon me today how judging is very subjective.

Two shows today in Dorchester.

First judge seemed to totally hate all my rabbits. Everything was complaints. It was like there was nothing good.
Second judge seemed to think my rabbits were okay. :)

Entered
One Junior Harlequin doe - 1 of 3 in both shows in her class.
One REW junior mini rex doe - 2 of 2 and then 1 of 2. :)
One Black junior mini rex doe - 1 of 1 in both shows.
One Black junior polish doe - 1 of 1 in both shows.
One Chocolate senior polish buck - brought him only because I was asked to help fill a class. came 3 of 3 and then 2 of 3.
One Broken senior mini rex buck - also brought him because was asked too 5 of 5 and 5 of 6.

I sold five bunnies, I bought one doe. She's a broken Chocolate polish.

Rearranged Rabbits this morning

Came into the rabbitry this morning to scuffling bunnies. My four young growers were being young idiots so I separated them. The two from Devon in one cage, the two from Party Girl in the other. ARGH!!! Silly bnnies, you all were supposed to get along for another month! Ah well...one works and cares for animals as they need it right? So they need separating... you go with when THEY tell you sometimes....

Since I was rearranging bunnies and since Cora was a grump this morning I thought...let's breed a couple. The only one that would breed besides Cora was Kacee so...we have a maiden doe and an experienced doe paired up. I'll keep trying with Lucy and Dolly to get them bred as well.

Anyways, since I've four rabbits that will hopefully be sold within the next three weeks I put them all in the old tent in the isolation cages, and I rearranged bunnies in the new tent. A lot of them are in new digs. Three cages that I"m not putting anyone in until either the weather settles some more OR I get the tarp covering everything. That will help prevent odd drafts making bunny tummies cold.

Checked on all my babies as I do every morning and they are all doing well. Shelley's kits which were born looking all white are looking rather odd...one might be a solid (or mostly solid blue or lilac), and the other two have these faint facial splits but ah...I don't know.... I'm really wanting them to fur up quickly. Hubby dear keeps reminding me to be patient...

Tentative sexing gives me Silver's kits being mostly bucks, Slip's kits being mostly female, and Rosie being split. Mind you...this is VERY tentative as well you see the "sex change fairy" likes to visit frequently at this age... so.. we continue to be patient.

What else can I say? It's a lovely day...go out and enjoy bunny binking. :)
